Meet the Team

 
Michal Moshkovich, President   Michal is a grade 12 student enrolled in the MaCS (math science and computer science) Program at William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute in Toronto. Ever since she was a little kid, Michal has known that she wanted to spend her life saving others’. Michal has a love for chemistry, biology, and research innovation. For the last two summers, she was a Research Assistant in a myeloma-dedicated research laboratory at the MaRS Discovery District. Michal enjoys giving back to the community through volunteering at a local hospital and senior centre. She is very involved in extracurricular activities at her school including DECA and HOSA, winning awards through both organizations on an international level. Aside from the medical field, Michal has a great interest in business management and entrepreneurship. She is the co-founder and CEO of a science start-up called  SpitStrips , whose mission is to save countless of lives by preventing drunk driving through an innovative product she created alongside her team. Michal believes that the field of medicine opens up the door to a myriad of opportunities, and that high school students should be aware of all these possible opportunities before they set out to make their career choices. Michal is very excited to work together with the entire OMS team to make this year’s OMS conference absolutely incredible!

Rikard Saqe, Plenary Director   Rikard is a grade 12 student in the MaCS Program at William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute. Shannon Oh, Co-President   Shannon is a grade 12 student currently in the MaCS (Math and Computer Science) program at William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute. Shannon's goal in life is to one day be able to serve as a doctor abroad in developing countries, where many cannot afford proper medical care. Her passion for her goal was sparked by her volunteer trip to the Dominican Republic this past summer, where she helped serve the community while also experiencing their way of life. Shannon also has many other interests and passions. In her academics, Shannon explores a wide variety of courses; her favourite subjects being Music and Computer Science. She is also very involved in her school community in a wide range of fields, having been involved with her school's Athletic Council, Newspaper Committee, Computer Programming Team, and HOSA Chapter. In her free time, you could probably find Shannon outside tossing a frisbee around with her friends, or playing on her clarinet at home. Shannon believes that there is so much more for high school students to learn about the field of medicine and health sciences, and is so excited to work together with this year’s incredible executive team to make this year’s conference the best one yet!

Ivan Qian, Logistics Director   Ivan is a grade 12 student currently attending Bayview Secondary School in the International Baccalaureate program. Since discovering the field of medicine, he knew he wanted to one day have the ability to brighten others’ days as a healthcare professional. As a passionate student-leader, Ivan is a member of the Markham Mayor’s Youth Council, the president of the Markham Key Club and the Chair of the York Region Youth Action Group in support of the Red Cross. He is also a trainer on Bayview’s DECA chapter and has competed as a member of Bayview’s swim and Dragon Boat teams. Ivan has been practicing a martial art form called wushu since a young age, having travelled to compete in places such as Costa Rica and Texas as a member of the National Team and is also a member of the York Region Dragon Boat club. His favourite subjects at school are biology and French and when he has free time available, he loves to watch Netflix, hang out with his friends downtown and listen to Kpop! This year, he cannot wait to serve as the Logistics Director on the OMS 2018-2019 team and take part in creating the best high school medicine-related conference to come!

Seyone Chithrananda, Sponsorships Director   Seyone is a grade 10 student currently attending William Lyon Mackenzie for the MaCS (Math and Computer Science) program in Toronto. Since a young age, Seyone has loved bonding and taking care of children, spending numerous years as a mentor in the Best Buddies program. Seyone has a passion for genomics and ophthalmology. He aims to one day become a pediatric ophthalmologist, combining his passions of treating the eye, improving vision for everyone, and his love of helping children. This upcoming year, he is joining The Knowledge Society, a program whose goal is to expose breakthrough technologies and opportunities to youth ages 13-17, where he aims to continue learning about CRISPR and genomics and apply it into real-world solutions. Outside of school, he is a 1st Dan black belt in taekwondo, and is also a Level 9 RCM pianist, performing at competitions and concerts. In school, he is the Finance Trainer for his DECA chapter and has won numerous awards at the regional and provincial levels. Seyone also is currently the communications secretary of Mackenzie Science Club, handling communications and media for the 120+ members of the club while competing at the Science Olympics at Western University. He is a member of the concert band and enjoys playing the clarinet. In his free time, Seyone enjoys reading, playing basketball, and spending time with family and friends. Seyone is honoured to be a part of OMS and wants to make this year the most successful conference yet!

Andy Zhu, Publicity Director   Andy is a Grade 11 student currently in the International Baccalaureate Program at Bayview Secondary School. As long as he can remember, Andy has wanted to improve the lives of others through healthcare. He aspires to be a cardiologist and work towards helping those diagnosed with various heart conditions. In school, Andy’s favourite subjects are biology and history, and he is heavily involved in extracurriculars, competing in his school’s DECA and HOSA chapters while serving as club executive for both. Being active in the community, Andy volunteers at Holland Bloorview Rehab Hospital and serves on the Youth Action Committee of Richmond Hill.Andy also has a strong passion for photography, travelling around the world to document wildlife and humanitarian efforts; last summer, he was part of a research expedition in the Amazon rainforest. Whenever he is free, Andy loves to travel, read, and explore downtown Toronto with his friends. He is looking forward to being a part of the OMS team and helping to create the best conference yet!

Victoria Leung, Finance Director   Victoria is a grade 12 International Baccalaureate student at Bayview Secondary School. At school, Victoria has been involved in student council, the prefect organization, and DECA. This year, she is excited to be student council vice president. Apart from OMS, she is a member of Richmond Hill’s Youth Action Committee and MP Majid Jowhari’s Constituency Youth Council. Last year, Victoria co-founded an organization, Emerge, that educates students about entrepreneurship. Victoria has been playing piano throughout her childhood and earned her ARCT diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music. In her spare time, she tutors high school students and volunteers. She loves giving back and helping charities to make a difference in people's’ lives. She is highly fluent in several languages and enjoys different cultures. Some of her interests include visual arts, history, and medical sciences. She also loves to take naps, play with dogs, and visit new attractions with her friends. Her goal is to be able to become an optometrist in the future. Her wish is to inspire others to be more compassionate and caring towards our society. Denesh Kumar, Advisor   Denesh is a first year student in the Bachelor of Honors Health Sciences program at McMaster University. He has previously served as a Co-President for OMS Toronto and is excited to continue working with OMS as an advisor for the 2019 conference. Denesh is very passionate about applying interdisciplinary approaches in medicine to build innovative solutions. To this end, he previously worked to develop hearing aids that were powered by thermoelectric generators and is currently working to develop an artificial intelligence based wellness app to improve the mental health of University students. He also enjoys being involved in his community and serves on the Bachelor of Health Sciences Society First Year Council to help plan events for his peers. In his spare time, Denesh enjoys playing video games, soccer and working out. Overall, he’s eager to work with this year’s talented team to help bring the conference to fruition.

Romy Levy, Conference Experience Director   Romy Levy is excited to be Operation Med School’s Conference Experience Director this year. She is a grade 10 student at Westmount Collegiate Institute where she is enrolled in her school’s dramatic arts program. Romy has always been interested in medicine and passionate about helping others by making a difference in her community and beyond. Aside from OMS, Romy is the founder and president of her school’s Because I am a Girl, Champions of Change Club where she explores social justice issues by encouraging open conversations regarding gender equality. She challenges harmful social norms, advocates for global issues, and helps to sponsor girls internationally in developing communities. Romy is also a member of Because I am a Girl’s Youth Speakers Bureau where she speaks on behalf of Plan International at numerous events and is a Teaching Executive for her school’s DECA chapter. In her free time, she loves to be active, meet new people, and travel! Romy is thrilled to make this year’s conference the best one yet.
